Chromotherapy (colour to heal)

Based on the principles of chromotherapy, this luminaire concept uses colours to promote wellness, harmony and healing of the body. Some of the therapeutic effects colours have on a persons well-being include:
  • Red - Energises, activates the emotions and effects the muscular system
  • Orange - Stimulates the mind, releases blocked emotions
  • Yellow - Stimulates the nervous system, changes pessimism to optimism
  • Green - Touches deep seated emotions, induces peace and harmony
  • Blue - Calms and heals the mind, reduces blood pressure, gives greater awarenessIndigo - Relaxing, soothing for the nervous system, helps a person cope with life
  • Violet - Can help with mental and emotional depression, purges the past to make way for a new beginning(Lacy 1996)

Using both direct and indirect lighting of room surfaces, the chosen colour is washed diffusely onto the ceiling whilst a warm white down light illuminates the space. Fully customisable colours and intensities are an option due to the RGB LED spectrum, allowing the user to configure the luminaires depending on their mood or therapeutic requirements. The third user adjustable variable is time, this gives the user the facility to influence their natural body clock, by selecting a time they want to wake up and the colour they want to wake up to, the light will then gradually bring them out of their sleep.

As further research into the effects of colour and light on the human body are reported, such as the impact blue light has on the circadian rhythm, the product allows the user to customise the three variables available, intensity, colour and time. The technical design is based around a symmetrical aluminium chassis that houses the uplight RGB LED\'s in one part and the warm white LED\'s in the underside with the drivers housed in a compartment in the centre. Light is pushed through an acrylic diffuser, giving a modern look whilst creating a soft uniform lighting effect.

Control of the luminaries is via a simple user friendly hand held infra-red remote.ReferencesLacy, M.L., 1996, The power of Colour to Heal the Environment, London: Rainbow Bridge
